30 Turkish nationals fled Turkey to Greece each day since Erdogan called for snap elections: report

About 30 Turks have been arriving on a daily basis since Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called for snap elections to be held next month, according to Greek media.
Kathimerini said Monday that some 30 Turkish nationals have fled Turkey to Greece each day since Erdogan announced that Turkey would hold presidential and general polls earlier than scheduled.
Erdogan’s announcement came on Apr 18, chancing the election date from some time in Nov 2019 to June 24, 2018.
Kathimerini said there were zero arrivals from Turkey prior to Erdogan’s rescheduling the election period. However, thousands of Turkish citizens have already claimed asylum in Greece since Erdogan stepped up his crackdown against his opponents since the July 15, 2016 failed coup attempt. Many believe that a re-elected Erdogan would expand his crackdown on his critics.
More than 150,000 people have been detained and some 80,000 including academics, judges, doctors, teachers, lawyers, students, policemen and many from different backgrounds have been put in pre-trial detention since the summer of 2016.
Many tried to escape Turkey via illegal ways as the government cancelled their passports like thousands of others.
On Feb 13, at least three people died and five others were missing after a boat carrying a group of eight capsized in the Evros River while seeking to escape a post-coup crackdown in Turkey to Greece.
